This work was inspired by a conversation with a woman from Central Africa who came to Belgium to pursue her studies. Before leaving, she had to leave her children behind, without them truly understanding what that separation meant.
She told me about the final moment before her departure. One child came to say goodbye. The other remained on a swing, silent and motionless, as if suspended in confusion.
That image became the last one she carried with her.
I wanted to capture that precise moment: childhood still present, the innocence of play, and at the same time, the invisible rupture taking shape.
The earring represents the passage of time. It symbolizes the child growing up without the daily presence of her mother, the adult she is already becoming.
What Remains speaks about absence, but above all about what outlives it: an image, a gaze, a memory that never leaves us.
