Zakia is a portrait of my young nephew. One day, while playing in my room, I showed him an old analogue camera. Growing up with smartphones and digital technology, he had never experienced photography in that way. Curious, he placed the camera around his neck. It was almost bigger than he was. The scene made me smile. It brought together two generations, two ways of looking at the world, and two eras of photography. I wanted to paint that moment as if he had been photographed with the very same camera. Zakia is about transmission. About the objects that travel through time and continue to tell a story as they are passed from one generation to the next.
